2 more shot as police & BSF march together to control Murshidabad violence

Violence continued to grip West Bengal’s Murshidabad district for the second consecutive day as fresh unrest broke out in the Dhulian and Shamsherganj areas early Saturday morning. Despite joint marches by the police and Border Security Force (BSF), two more individuals were reportedly shot, taking the tally to four injured in two days.

The victims have been identified as Golam Mohiuddin Sheikh (21) and Hasan Sheikh (12). Both were rushed to the hospital after being shot in Dhulian. Their condition is currently stable, but their injuries have intensified the fear already simmering in the region.

The trouble began on Friday night, when widespread vandalism and arson were reported across the district. Government property, including traffic police control offices and ambulances, was set ablaze, alongside the torching of public and private vehicles, including buses, cars, and bikes.

Visuals from the ground show charred remains of infrastructure and heavy deployment of security forces. The BSF began night patrols on Friday and has since been marching jointly with state police to contain further violence. Surveillance has been intensified in trouble-hit localities, especially Dhulian, which appears to be at the epicenter of the unrest.

ADG (Law and Order) Javed Shamim confirmed that the situation is under control, and added that the police are exercising maximum restraint in their operations. He also stated that discussions have taken place between the Governor, administrative officials, and the Union Home Ministry to assess the situation and plan further response.

Meanwhile, local residents remain anxious amid heavy force deployment. Political observers note that unless root causes behind the unrest are swiftly addressed, the district may see continued volatility. The state government has urged people to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours.
